Made in Abyss Awakening Mystery Is Where the Series Stops Playing Safe

Made in Abyss Awakening Mystery (Mezameru Shinpi) is the dark fantasy movie fans have been waiting for. It is the next part of the Made in Abyss series, as the studio Kinema Citrus decided to do a movie instead of the series, and the next part is already being confirmed.

After the release of Made in Abyss Part 1 back on October 23, 2026, the film continues where Season 2 ended. The cast of Made in Abyss Part 2 returns to voice Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and Faputa, as they journey below the point of no return, into the perilous Seventh Layer. Made in Abyss Part 2 is currently in production, so this Made in Abyss movie 2026 release is definitely part of the official Made in Abyss watch order.

Made in Abyss Awakening Mystery Is the Made in Abyss Golden City Sequel Fans Wanted

This is the Made in Abyss Golden City sequel, plain and simple. The film continues directly from the 2022 TV anime, so there’s no recap and no soft reset. Riko, Reg, Nanachi and Faputa are heading into the seventh layer, which a French encyclopedia entry for the film names as the Final Maelstrom.

That’s a big deal for the series. The deeper the group goes, the less the Abyss feels like a place for adventure and the more it feels like a place that wants something back. Faputa’s presence only raises the stakes, because the party is no longer just surviving the layers. They’re bringing something with them.

The Made in Abyss Cast and Staff Are Almost Entirely Back

Consistency matters in a series this dependent on mood, and the core team is returning.

The main trailer introduced two new cast members and previewed a theme song by Mori Calliope and Kevin Penkin. The film is also introducing new faces, including Tepaste and Cravagli from the teaser art and, in newer stills, the first look at a character named Nishagora.

Made in Abyss Watch Order: What to Watch Before Awakening Mystery

New to the series? Here’s the Made in Abyss watch order I’d follow:

  1. Made in Abyss (Season 1)
  2. Marulk’s Daily Life (optional short)
  3. Dawn of the Deep Soul (the 2020 movie)
  4. The Golden City of the Scorching Sun (Season 2)

In English-speaking territories, the anime streams on HIDIVE. The recap films, Journey’s Dawn and Wandering Twilight, are Season 1 compilations, so you can skip them. You also don’t need the manga to follow the film, though reading it first won’t save you from any of the emotional damage.

Why the Made in Abyss Theatrical Series Format Makes Sense

Nobody has given a full official reason for the switch from TV, but the logic holds up. One frame of Made in Abyss can carry an entire scene, and a film schedule gives Kinema Citrus room to polish animation, backgrounds and sound in a way weekly TV can’t.

There’s also the source material to consider. ComicBook.com pointed out that the manga is still releasing the arc being adapted, which makes a film series a safer fit than a long TV order. The Made in Abyss theatrical series also lets each installment land as an event. Some outlets call it a trilogy, but the part count hasn’t been clearly confirmed, so treat that as a report, not a promise.

Made in Abyss Part 2 and the Made in Abyss Season 3 Question

Made in Abyss Part 2 is in production, though I haven’t been able to confirm that from an official source yet. The release date, title and any staff changes haven’t been announced.

For anyone searching for Made in Abyss season 3: this film series is the continuation, so a traditional TV Season 3 isn’t the plan.
